sealed beams to halogen bulbs

I want to get some e-code 5 3/4" halogen replacements for my 450SL. I was wondering if any of you have done this, and how much work it entails (mounting, wiring, etc.) I was recommended the site http://www.talbotco.com/e-code_lamps.htm
the high beams are on sale, so I would like to buy them while they're cheap

Are you talking about regular sealed beam replacements? If so, there is nothing to the job. You just remove the sealed beam and put the replacement in place the H4 bulb has the same prong arrangement as the sealed beam.

Larry, What about the H1 units?

Sorry to sound like a newbie.. but am I right to assume that the 116/107's sealed beam config is like the W123's? As in one of them is for lo/hi-beam and the other is a fog light? (for each side)

It seems that they sell a separate H1 High beam unit (5.75"). How would he go about replacing the fog light unit with an H1 high beam unit?

BTW, 4NDELIT

I'd just go and get the CIBIE E-Code 5.75" H4 first and replace the main sealed beams and see the improvement before getting the H1 units.

I use Philips' Vision Plus H4 55/60W and they are pretty bright!

BTW, I checked out the new Mercedes G500's and inside their 7" headlights I saw Philips' premium H4 bulbs..

uh..... that's where the complication comes in... I have one set of circles for low, one set of circles for high, and a set of rectangle for fogs. I'm not sure if I should get the low/hi beams. Maybe I could wire it so that when I flash my brights, I'll blind them with 4 lights??? (2 lo/hi and 2 hi). I didn't see any low beams only... just low/hi. any ideas?

Go there and email the site owner and tell him your situation he should be able to help. Dan replied to my e-mail.. I didn't think he would.. but he replied throughly!

Great site! He also sells the CIBIE E-Code headlights so he should be able to sell you the correct ones..

I'm sure that you could get the hi-lo beam unit to replace your low beam and connect the high beam to go simultaneously with the other (5.75 H1) high beam unit.. you'd have really bright high beams though hehehe..

lol... I'm a dumbass (can I say that?) I was looking at the light itself. It happens to be that I have a hi/lo AND a high beam, so when I flash the brights, 6 filaments are on (2lo/2hi + 2hi). I have seen that website, and they're 56 bucks there... a little steep. I'm going to get them tomorrow at inter auto parts, they're 45 bucks each there (no shipping!). Thanks a lot for all the help

Nice... so they are drop in replacements!

Post pictures when you're done and do update us on how things were improved. Make sure you aim them properly... aiming them using a cardboard is easiest because you can move the cardboard instead of the car more easily.

What brand are these 5.75" units that you're getting from the local parts shop?
I'd sink more money into Hellas and Cibies just because....

but that's me..... what I kinda want to do now is put in 7" Xenarcs (6024 replacement HID's) in my US headlight assembly..

I wanna get an R107 too.. damn.. love 'em roadsters! Definitely some classic!

oh yeah... the old bulbs are aimed by the housing, so if the new ones fit right, I don't have to aim them!

if you are installing/replacing the bulbs yourself, be sure to not touch the bulb glass with your bare hands. The oils in your skin will stick to the bulb glass, heat it up when you turn it on, and will reduce bulb life. If you accidentally do touch it, be sure to clean it with isopropyl alcohol.

those double-round Euro replacements will do wonders not only for night illumination but also how your car looks during the daytime - you will notice how much more sophisticated they look compared with the stock sealed beam units. And you have a wide choice of bulbs to choose from.

i personally prefer Bosch. In one of my previous cars, I upgraded only the outer lamps (hi-lo, with H4 bulbs) and that was one of the best investments I've ever made.

i have a suggestion - i don't know if it will fit, but why don't you consider the ellipsoidal outer lamps that were used on previous 5-series and 3-series BMWs? Ellipsoidal lamps get their name from the ellipsoidal reflectors they use (vs paraboloid ones in ordinary units), which results in more efficient light usage (more light is captured by/reflected off an ellipsoid reflector than a paraboloid unit). These ellipsoid lamps have a small front lens (which makes some manufacturers call them projector lamps) through which the reflected light passes. This alone will change the look of your car into a more contemporary one (many new cars have ellipsoidal headlamps).

ever wonder why the headlights have such a profound effect on the look of your car? Because they are the "eyes" of the car, and the eyes are the windows to the soul ...

I know all about BMW headlights and euro-spec vs US spec... my brother swapped the US ellipsoids with the euro-spec ones in his E34 535i, did a HID conversion too. You wanna talk about eyes being windows to the soul...!
