What is the reason(s) for the major drop in 450 h.p. from 180 to 160 between 1979 and 1980 models? What are some ways to get some or all of it back without severe pain and consternation?

Thanks. Keith Arndt

Keith,
The engine was de-tuned to provide better fuel economy. The rear axle ratio was also made taller (from a 3.07 to a 2.65) to help with fuel economy. (both to the harm of performance) Also in 1980, the A/C was used to cool the fuel being fed to the engine to combat vapor lock.

Your best bet to regain that lost performance is to buy a pre-1980 car, or get a bigger engined car.

Hope this helps...Lee

Lee:

What can you tell me about the specifics of the de-tuning? Did they reduce bore, stroke, cam lift, valve size, air or fuel intake?

This was M.B.'s first year for lamda(oxygen sensor) fuel system controls. Also the emission output for 1980 cars were much tighter for all cars(grams @ mile instead of percentadge) so cars with bigger engines suffered. Fuel systems, exhaust & engine componets all were modified. Find a good 1979 & you will go much faster.
