Check Engine Electronics on 96 E-320
 

The "Check Engine" light on the right side of the dash stays on all the time. Every time the car is started the following message appears in the LED instrument display: "Check Engine Electronics". I have taken the car in to a dealer two times and the problem still is not fixed. The first time the dealer told me he reset the sensor so the light would go out and that he could not find anything else wrong.

Now, he says he "thinks" the injectors need to be replaced. The car only has 63,000 original miles and this seems a little bit unusual to me.

Has anybody had a similar problem ? I am not opposed to replacing the injectors if that is really the problem, however, I am beginning to distrust my dealer.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Run away!! The diagnostic procedure you're describing will make you poor. They should read the codes and find out what is REALLY causing the light to come on.

If I remember right, the EGR system on the M104 is a common CE light trigger...

(do some searches, including a better tech...)

Yes bring it to another reputable dealer on Good indy shop.The should have scanned the codes.

1996 is the first year of OBD-II, and it does a better job of allowing you to retrieve more and better codes, also on a "live" basis.

I can think of no less then 6 things off the top of head that might turn you CEL on an none of them are injectors. Codes need to be read an then checked for possible cause. Find out more before you plunk down big cash for injectors either at the dealer or find a good independent. Ask people who drive them where they get theres FIXED, then call the BBB and see what they have to say about them. Good luck.

Not going to believe this.
 

I just wanted to let all know that I solved the CEL - Check engine electronics. I took to an independent repair shop and the tech asked when the battery had been changed. I told him that I did not think it had ever been changed so he checked it and found it to be the original battery(remember that the car is a '96 model).

At any rate, he installed a new battery and we have not had any more problems with the CEL. Evidently the low voltage in the battery was causing one or more of the sensors to detect faults that did not really exist.

This seems like such a "no-brainer" to check the battery on a 6 year old car. However, I took the car to two seperate dealerships and neither of them said anything about the possibility of low volatge causing the problem.
