The AC in my 1990 300SE smells funky. We've had some very hot and humid weather here in NY and it seems to have gotten worse in the past week or so. Any ideas? Thanks!

It could be the smell of the refrigerant. Is your A/C still working properly?

If it smells musty then it is mold growing in the A/C condenser/evaporator (whichever one is under the dash - I always get them mixed up). Anyway, my girlfreinds Acura has it real bad and the deal has a product they can spray inside to kill the mold. This only helps for a little while. The only thing we found that helped was to keep the fan on at all times and turn the A/C off a couple minutes before your destination. This helps to blow air around inside and dry things out. Seems to work. Good luck

Most auto supply stores should have an A/C disinfectant that you spray in the vents. I've seen it in our local Canadian Tire. I would imagine that Pep Boys would have it in the US. Don't know how good it is, but it might be worth a try.

In the 140, Mercedes will help you in some cases if the evaporator goes south. Usually when you smell this, it will go within a month or so.

Mercedes issued a S.I. on this subject about 7-8 years ago, they recommend the use of disenfectant spray into the air intake on low blower speed w/EC button depressed.
