I am looking to purchase a 1990 300TE 4-MATIC with 181K miles in fantastic shape. What makes me nervous is the 4-MATIC option. This is apparrently a sealed unit and was told about 5K to replace. How does this unit fail, how often, real costs involved. Any advice will be apprecciated!!

I have only worked on one or two and I have never seen one with this high mileage. My advise is to see all records of maintenance.
