1987 260E not used for a while...

Hi,

My 1987 260E has only 51k miles on it. It hasn't been used in a long while. It runs OK, but not that smooth. Since it's been sitting in the garage most of it's life, what ITEMS should I replace other than doing an oil change. I'm thinking of tuning it up myself, but am not sure what should be replaced regularly and at what frequency. I will be driving it everyday from now on since I bought it from my parent....

thanks,

sjsfiji

Hi There:

I would do a normal tune up. I would change the plugs, cap, rotor and possibly the wires. Check the wires first and change it only if you need to.

Aloha,
Eric

I suspect, if it has not been used for a while, you may have jump started the car. If this is so, the OVP fuse can often blow, which would cause rough running.

So in addition to the above items, be sure to check the fuse too. Do a search on OVP, I have posted pictures of one before. It's only the fuse on the top you have to check/replace, not the whole relay.

Also, if you are looking for peace of mind, DEFINITELY replace all the existing fuses in the fuse box. It is very common for them or the contacts to corrode, and intermittently stop working.

This will cause you many headaches and lots of £$$ before you figure it out - It took me a few months of windscreen wipers mysteriously stopping temporarily, fuel pump stopping for 5 seconds etc. to do it myself.

good luck!
