Question Rear wheel position

Suspension question on my '95 E320 wagon: The rear wheels are not in the same relative position. If I measure from the treads at the rear of the tire to the lip on the rear fender, there is about a 1/2" difference in distance between the right and left side. I did the same measurments on my '95 Ranger (which I know has never been hit), and there was also this same condition. Any ideas why there might be this difference? I have about 25,000 miles on the tires, and they are wearing very evenly, the car drives just fine.
