HID control module

I have a 1996 SL600. The right xenon bulb occasionally and unpredictably goes dark, and corrects by turning the lights off and on again. My mechanic (not a Mercedes shop, nearest is 200 miles away) determined it was the control module. When a replacement part was obtained, it looked identical, except the index pin on the plug didn't match the socket. We didn't know if modifying the plug would work or fry the part, so it was returned. The Mercedes dealer in Sioux Falls now said that a replacement module is not available, and the whole headlight assembly must be replaced to the tune of about $1400. Can anyone advise me? Can the plug be modified? Is a module available? Is there any chance of a salvage part, and where would I look for that? Thanks for any thoughts on the matter.
