W140 -- Howto remove the Climate Control Push Buttons
 

Anyone know how is the push button climate control module on W140 can be removed? That is removing the Wood trim than the Climate Control Module?

I"m new @ self repairs on the benz myself. They do make it difficult,but heres what I know. You have to remove the wood !st. To do this you need a small phillips head screw driver . Unscrew the one screw holding the ashtray wood, just enough to slide it up and out. Now you have access to two torque screws at the bottom connecting the two wood peices. You will need a #10 or #15 torks head socket to remove.There is also two screws after you remove the radio. They are @ the top .Use a regular small phillips head. Now ....from what I know you need a radio removal key. This has multifunctions. One being to remove the radio, they also said it is to be used to remove the a/c controls. I haven,t had to do that yet so I am not speaking from experience,but I got my radio removal tool from EBAY. The auction starts @ 9$ and they have a buy it now price of 19$. Just wondering what search string you used on E-Bay for the key? I hear you can use a coat hanger for that, do you think we can use the coat hanger for the A/C unit as well?

Radio removal tool is available from the dealer for under $10. Or from Samstag Tools:

In general to get to the AC pushbutton you would have to remove:
1. Ashtray wood cover
2. Plactic frame around shift lever
3. Wood cover from the shifter console (the one with the window switches)

4. Remove radio (make sure you have a code)
5. Remove center console wood cover:
two small philips screws at the bottom in the ashtray area and two small phillips screws in the radio openning. Then lift cover at the bottom to horizontal position and pull it back to disconnect hooks at the top.
6. Remove AC control - two small phillips screws.

I usually go to ebay and type mercedes radio or mercedes s. Those tools are pretty popular on there now. As far as going to the dealers,they all seem pretty unfriendly when it comes to do it yourselfers and answering any do it yourself type of questions. I tried to purchase one from Mercedes of Westmont In ILL. And they told me they didn't have one. So Ebay has been a good resource for me ....No Attitudes ;)

Those slots are slanted and rather small.I think a hanger would cause damage. I don't suggest that. Also the wood looks pretty ugly scratched up and thats also probaly what may happen:eek:

First of all guys, if you have the newer style climate control panel, the one where it's just one rectangular box with the slots in the bottom corners, then you only need the radio keys, you don't need to remove the wood panels.
If it's the older style, where the climate control seems to be 3 seperate squares (wood between the 3 squares), then the wood needs to come off to remove the climate control push button panel.
Tipstas, you haven't been to "all" the Mercedes dealers, we aren't all pretty unfriendly, some of us like to help out when we can. Gross generalizations like that can really offend people. We all need to learn to be more tolerant.

Hey Gilly .....You know you're right.I can only speak from my experiences and frustrations. Matter of fact the frustration continues on here when I try to help someone and the only thing that gets noticed is something that may offend someone. I think you can safely say yourself you are in the minority when it comes to good, honest and helpful auto technicians. But, as I've said I"m sorry if I offended you,but that's how it always is....the people who should be offended don't care enough to even acknowledge what I said, while they are vacationing on monies they received from hardworking people who don't have the technical knowledge to challenge them.

PS...I didn't get many responses to my cries for help on this forum.
But, Gilly I'm always looking for a good friend or just plain ole' good advice when it comes to my Benz, so if I can count on you sometimes please let me know.:cool:
