I went back for another look yesterday with the comments about "girl car" fresh on my mind. When I picture a middle aged man cruising with the top down, his greying hair sprouting from underneath a houndstooth tam'o'shanter, lips in an Elvis (Billy Idol) sneer,..........Naw, my wife would look a LOT better in this thing than me. (sigh) Oh well, it was fun while it lasted!

What does price have anything to do with it? Blackmercedes is just driving his old 201 car because he sold his 210, which he obtained after his AMG, which incidently, handled better than his 930 P-car. You're full of ****. I suggest you take that back.

I am sure I can round up a soul or two that would be willing to testify that I am not a Mercedes-Benz snob. I don't look down on people that drive an aging 240D. Quite the reverse, in fact. I admire people that own these cars, regardless of economic status.

Owning a Mercedes has become a "status" symbol, but that is not the appeal for many enthusiasts. The reason many folks here own them is for their driving pleasure, engineering excellence, and just plain fun of it.

When someone refers to "wanna-be" I'm not sure what it is I wanna be. Do I wanna be...

...a rich fop that buys a new S-Class solely for the Star, and cares nothing for the car's ability?

...a person seeking to fool people into thinking he is richer than he really is by driving a certain make of car?

...a car-nut that loves interesting cars and the pleasure of owning an over-engineered piece of machinery?

Hey! I do "wanna-be" that last one!! So, I guess Keith was right, I am a wanna-be.

Any other wanna-be's kicking around here?

In fact, I buy all my cars used - after they have depreciated at least 50% or more.

I'm so cheap I probably squeak when I walk.

I think the real issue is that the Cap’n is a wanna be. What the Cap’n wanna be is to have his friend BenzE with him. With BenzE sadly gone, the Cap’n is trying to find something to help him over-come the loss.

By extension I’d have to suggest that perhaps Keith never had a great friend, so he ran out and bought himself a S class to help him feel good. But for some reason Keith still doesn’t feel good, and so, in the spirit of trying to talk the Cap’n outta buying a SLK he thoughtlessly took a swipe at the owners of entry level MB vehicles (I've done that too, 'cause I thought it was funny).

Guys... If you read his post, he came after me. Is the SLK230 a fine car? Yes. Would I reccommend it over an Accord if asked? Yes.

In actual fact, I was defending SLK drivers who were characterized as less than masculine. I was also defending those of us "wanna-bes" and our entry level cheapo MB's.

I was not slinging mud, but merely wiping some off myself...

It is true that I associated that wonderful little creature to the E class (hence his name) and that he was chosen for his color (white) and I can still see him hanging his head out the window riding down the road. I wish buying another car would help. But it won't. I cannot dwell on that and it's time to move on.
The SLK was considered to remedy another dreadful situation that has come to pass... middle aged crazy.
Every year in October we head for the hills for a 1000 mile fall drive. I used to call them mountains but some of you REAL mountain people would laugh at me!

Convertibles get very attractive for this. The only problem is that whatever I buy, I'll have to drive the REST of the year and I don't think the SLK will fit that bill.

hey the slk is bulletproof
and it is a great get up and go car
and it is totally a chick car
...
things i have a prob with:

the car is loud
i mean loud
i mean it sounds tinker toyishly loud...
to the point where IMO doesn't even belong in the same class as a mercedes...(sorry SLK owners i don't mean to bash these beautiful and fun cars...)
i know of the sound/volume because one of the music managers has one and she always stays late so she gives her key to the person that parks tandem with her and he's made several comments as to how loud the car is....and it's a 2001

no storage/trunk space
no availability to carry more than one passenger
no possibility for an awesome deep bass sound system unless you do some heavy heavy modifying/cutting of the car....

but that's it...

would i ever own one?
of course!!! (if given)

would i ever buy one?
probably not...would rather buy a used E320 cabrio

One thing about this board - you can get alot of different viewpoints and that is a good thing. I could go out and purchase a brand new S500 if that is what I wanted to drive but believe it or not I would rather drive a W123. I've been through that middle age crazy stuff and ended up purchasing a 50cc scooter (Yamaha Jog) to get my kicks with and I purchased it used

. Anyway, I think each to his/her own

, I'll stick with my cheap to own, cheap to purchase and cheap to drive W123's. I got rid of a very nice 1995 E320 just because I kinda like the "old" technology (and some to appease the wife who was telling me to "get rid of one of them").

Steve was the car "local" Eastman or Macon?

Don't know Jim. I seem to only get to the lot after hours so I haven't talked to anyone yet. I was hoping someone would steer me away before it got to the point of test driving and chin rubbing!

I don't know how some replies took on a personal flame just because someone gave an opinion! I guess we have such strong emotions about our cars that we tend to attack those that disagree. I should have known better than ask opinions. I may just buy a late model Mustang and be the scourge of all the "purists" here. :p
