What's a girl's car?
I have couple mercedes (('92 500e with renntech mods, '91 300 te 4 matic with 4 Nokian all seasons)) and a couple non-mercedes (96 Audi Cabriolet, 79 Porsche 91 sc targa). Taken all together, they are not worth a new clk cabrio in $$. I bought them all used. I have the Audi because I "need" a four seater and I can't afford a 93-95 320 cabrio. I drove the Audi in this week's homecoming parade and alot of high school guys said it was the coolest car in the parade (which included a couple dealer provided new little lexus roadsters, BMW converts and CLK converts and a couple slk's), but I suspect it was because I drew the prettiest girl to sit up on the back, so the boys were looking for an excuse to make conversation. The lexus dealer even asked me if my '96 was new (the '96 is built on a circa 1990 "90" chassis and the "new Audi" is atop an A4 chassis!

If you still want to be talked out of it....
Don't do it!!!! As soon as you get it you'll be hooked. It's a slippery slope to more and more Mercedes. OK, since you've already got the 300E, you're already hooped so you might as well give in and enjoy life! Post a pic of the SLK when you get it!

rbn3,
I think you're safe with your cars, although the Audi is questionably a GIRL'S CAR!!!! Did any of the guys you met at the parade wink at you? All kidding aside, we are all aware of those cars ladies particulaly like. A few come to mind: VW Cab, Miata, Z3 etc... Lets be honest, the SLK undoubtedly fits into this catagory. GO BUY A 500SL !!! |

I suppose a new SL55 AMG is considered a girls car as well going by his rules.
Me, I'm just a wannabee (pauper's C-Class). I think I will change the channel. |

I wonder if that noise comes from the supercharger? My wife's Buick GSE has a GMC supercharger and it's quiet...until you "stick it". Then it sounds as if it's trying to suck up all the air in the world!!

The 4-cylinder engines may or may not be noisey, but I'm sure most the mechanical noise you hear is the supercharger.
Every automotive magazine the has tested any MB model with the supercharger has commented on how noisey it is.

I thought the supercharges were belt driven and turned with the engine. I still am 100% sure that most, but not all, of the noise that people hear comes from the supercharger. I bet ya 44 million dollars.
I'm not sure why, but I remember as plain as day, that all of the magazines complained about the racket that the supercharges made, especially when cold at start-up.

I know the noise you're talking about.
My mom had a '94 C220 that was noisey at idle, kinda like a fork in a garbage disposal. There is a young kid who lives in my townhouse complex who has a C230 Kompressor (he's Chinese with parents that spoil him), and when he drives past my unit in the driveway, you can hear the difference between what a normal C220 / C230 makes and what the Kompressor's make.

TO BE HONEST...
if i were to get a 4 cylinder, i'd have to opt for the integra. only cause my 90' integra was the smoothest quietest and punchiest little engine i ever had...built like a tank...able to be beaten down ...

Cap'n.......for the $$$ try to find a 90's 300-320SL...that's been well cared for, and you will be $$$ ahead, and own something you will be proud of for years to come. The inline six is nice, easy to maintain, and kicks butt when needed.
It may be hard to find, just keep looking. I think you will be happy with this car, it just seems like the best deal to me.
