I have a E320 '99 with a current mileage of59,000. My oil dipstick shows that it is on the minimum level. I read the manual but I couldn't find any oil recommendation. I usually use mobil 1 synthetic 5-30 on my odyssey. I am also planning to change the oil in the near future on my MB. What oil and weight do you recommend...

Here's the website that list oils approved by Mercedes. You'll find some on the first page and also near the bottom of the list where you'll see the different oils and weights that are 229.3 certified.

When you go that list, you will find that there are only a couple xxW-30 oils listed. As a matter of fact, they're probably not available here in the states anyways. German cars require at least xxW-40 oil. For Mobil 1 products available in the US your choices are 0W-40, 5W-40, 15W-50, or the real thick stuff 20W-50. No xxW-30 oil sold in the US meets the 229.3 standard.
I just visited that site and it says flat out that NONE of Mobil 1s xxW-30 oils are recommended. MY VW Passat, which has the 1.8 turbo engine requires at least 5W-40, which Mobil does not sell in the US. SO if I want to use their product I would have to use 15W-50, can't find anyone selling 0W-40.

I found Mobil 1 0W-40 on the shelve at my local AutoZone about one month ago. The AutoZone is located in Glendale Heights, Illinois. It was only available in quarts.

Rick, not to start a major oil discussion here but Amsoil sells a 10W-30 that is 229.3 approved. Now that's a great oil!! IMHO of course.

I agree with Jet on that one. I've been using Amsoil for years and will continue to until I die. The 10w-30 is an awesome oil, but would highly recommend the High Performance 10w-40 by Amsoil. It is 229.3 rated and the way Mobil has been in the last several years, the 10w-40 Amsoil will not change the product line like Mobil has.

If you look closely at the Amsoil 10w-40 specs, you will see that it's also rated for the newest Diesels out there. This CI-4 rating is just out but it also meets the most toughest specs from Mack, etc.

I will say that the Mobil Delvac 1, which is a 5w-40 oil is terrific, but when they came out with the new CI-4 spec, the pour point changed dramatically.

I know that everyone of us had our opinions on oil, but no matter what oil you use, keep it changed regularly. It's such cheap insurance!!

Hello Again,

I found a mobil1 synthetic 0W-40 in my local autozone but my problem is that I have no clue what type of oil did the dealer used before I got the car since my plan is just adding 1 to 2 quarts, I think the only option I have is to do an early oil change. Is there any special thing to consider in changing a w210 engine? I usually do my own oil change with all of my car, and always love to wrench and the feeling of accomplishment.

I would top off with the 0W40, oils are compatable with one another.
