Shaking Steering wheel when braking...
I just had all new pads and rotors installed, in addition to the steering damper. Everything was fine for the first week or so.
Recently I have noticed that when I brake on the fwy (usually above 50 mph), the steering wheel shakes/vibrates. I also had my tires rotated about 2 weeks ago... Sound like I need a balancing? I know I need an alignment. 1995 C280. Thanks

Sounds like warped front rotors.
Pretty strange, though since they're new....

I had been driving with warped rotors for 10k miles..... so I am 'freshly' familiar with the feel, and it doesn't feel like warped rotors...

Hmmmmm, then you got me.
Worn out tie rod end bushings? Wheel bearings?

Now we're on to something!!
So, tie rod end bushing, or wheel bearings, huh? My steering is quite loose, if those are symptoms of that also... Thanks kiddo.

IF the car only shakes durning braking then the FRONT brake rotors are almost always at fault!! Even if they are almost new!!

I may be stating something obvious to you, but are the wheel lug nuts properly torqued? Overtorqued lug nuts are a major source of warped rotors and shaking during braking for many car owners.

If you have a dragging piston seal in a caliper, it will leave one pad resting against the rotor if you stopped hard just before parking it. This makes the rotor cool off faster on one side than the other causing rotor warp.
Good luck, |

OK, I have also noticed that the vibration is in the steering wheel AND the brake pedal......
I'm gettin this checked out soon. Car drive's like shlt!! I need an alignment too. Car totally veers to the right also. Anyway.

David:
Could you post back when they figure out what the problem is? I have the exact same problem with my 190e. Brakes applied very softly at 50-60 will not cause the problem, but if I press firmly, the steering wheel and pedal shake. I too have newer rotors and pads. Someone suggested tie rod ends, but I don't know anything about that. I have new wheel bearings too and that isn't the problem either. Thanks for the help! Michael. |

I'm willing to bet that it's either a warped front rotor or a sticking caliper problem.
If your steering wheel shakes / vibrates and your brake pedal pulsates, it's almost certainly a rotor / caliper problem. My engineer buddy at Mitsubishi Motors U.S.A. tells me that worn out tie rod ends will cause a front vibration problem that can cause your steering wheel to shake. It almost feels like you have a front tire that is slightly out of balance. With a worn out tie rod end, your wheels will actually bounce from side to side, instead of up and down as in the case of an out of balance tire.

In my own opinion, i think it is a plain mis- alignment and combination of tie-rod problem. I believe due to tie rod problem, it will cause it to misalign.

Had my oil changed today, and my driver's side wheel bearing is slightly lose... but not enough to do as i describe.
I'm going back next week so he can test drive it.

if the rotor is warped it is easy to check for runout, but it is better to find out why it warped in the first place, specially if they are new. i had a similar problem in our family van. had the rotors turned + new pads which was good for about 15k miles. when problem started up again i replaced rotors and pads then i noticed that one side was getting really hot to touch and discovered that a bad piston seal was causing sticking on one caliper. had to replace caliper but that was probably the original culprit in the first place...

Like DOC said, you likely have bad rotors(warped perhaps). I went through a similar situation with my 126 car about a year ago. Competent indy garage changed out all rotors and pads - used OEM parts. From highway speed while braking, I experienced front-end shudder. Took the car back, The owner ordered another set of front rotors. Same thing, Took it back again, This time he reordered both front and rear rotors. Same thing. Reordered another set(all the way around) AGAIN! Finally got it this time. Apparently his supplier(Caliber MB - Anaheim, Calif) had a bad batch of rotors - some sort of production issue I suppose. It happens. My 2 cents.
