Oil pressure at idle...is 1 bar too low?
I am looking to purchase a 500SL. All but one of them have what I tend to regard as low oil pressure at operating temperature while idling. Is this normal, even allowing for the possibility of light-weight oils? (One I drove today was about 2.5 bars at idle -- same as my 300SL).

That's still within acceptable limits. Specs allow the idle pressure to go as low a .3 bar at temp, as long as the gauge pegs by 1K RPM.
FWIW my 4.5 shows 1 bar (~15PSI) idling at temp while the 5.6 show 1.5 bar. The 4.5 pegs as soon as it is off idle and the 5.6 pegs well before 1K RPM. What did this car do upon accelerating?

Year and mileage. Did you register the 1 bar at cold startup or after you drove it around for awhile. Looking at the cluster, I think it is the R129 90-95 sl. If so, it would be equiped with the M119 Motor. I have had two oil pressure problems with my 99 s420 and the dealer replaced oil pump and oil sending unit. If this is the problem then it shouldnt cost more than $700 to fix. If you got 1 bar on a cold startup then something is very wrong. How did the needle move, did it quickly pin to 3 or slowly?

These cars are 93s and 94s with between 40K and 95K on the clock. In my original post I included a picture, but in a subsequent edit I lost same and can't get it back! Oh well.
The car that has 2.5 bar at operating temperature and idle is a '91 with 120,,000 miles. I actually drove this car. All of the ones with low oil pressure are being sold on eBay. I can see the temp. gauge and have nothing else to go by.

The type of oil used and how long the car has been running can dictate the oil pressure at idle. So if you use synthetic and have been driving for a few hours it will be pretty low (around 1 on my car anyway) but if you are using dino oil it will be up a bit and if you have been driving or idling for less than 30 or so minutes it stays up there in the 2-3 range until the car really gets going for bit.

Am I right then to say that the oil pressure is not indicative of an engine's health?
Check this out... low oil pressure.. 7000 mi! The 98F temperature worries me a little too. But then again the idle speed of this car is pretty low.
