I have an '84 380SL that won't start due to the ignition switch lock mechanism having a problem. The key turns only part way but not enough to fire up the engine. The locksmith can solve the problem but I have to remove the assembly and take it to him for repair. The question is 'how difficult is that to do and does it require special tools??' It looks like I have to take apart quite a bit before getting to it. My other option is to have it towed to a mechanic and have them do it. Opinions???

If the lock will turn to the position 2 you are OK. You have to insert a pin into the access hole in the tumbler with the key in position 2. Then turn the protective sleeve counter-clockwise untill the tumbler comes loose. A medium sized paper clip works well.
If the lock is seized, call the tow truck. ------------------ Benzmac: ASE CERTIFIED MASTER AUTO TECHNICIAN SERVICE MANAGER FOR 14 BAY FACILITY MERCEDES SPECIALIST 8 YRS PARTNER IN MERCEDESSHOP.COM |

Benzmatic,
Thanks for the help in the past, just found this one in the archives. Currently my lock is siezed. Tried all the tricks, but it is definitely toast. Before I call the tow truck, I have an important question: Do I need to go to Mercedes for this, or can a competent independent handle the job. My competent independent is a MUCH shorter tow-truck ride, and experienced with these cars. Just wondering if Mercedes will supply this part to just anyone - for security reasons and all. Thanks very much in advance, Sly 94 C280 175000 KM |
