Nobody has ever seen this before!

I've serached and posted, but I don't think anybody has seen this before.

MBZ 1993 400E
Dead Radio
No response when I push the power button.
Except, occasionally " E 2" will come on the display for about 5 seconds and go off.

Checked all the fuses, no aparent failures. Everything else on the same fused circuit works OK

It must have (some) power, for the E 2 to display.

One more hint, perhaps; The seat belt warning light flashes all the time, and I think that started at the same time the radio quit working.

Anybody have any ideas about what might be wrong?

Thanks.

I seem to remember seeing the "E2" error code on my radio when it went bad. It turned out to be the actual tuner which is in the trunk (the head unit in the dash is basically buttons and the tape player).

There is a separate Becker forum. Might want to check this out. Do an internet search on "becker board" and you should find it.

The other excellent source of info is Beckerautosound. They have a web site and very knowledgable techs. One of them, Ed Ebel, is a regular on the Ritter/Easley list.

Faults that will trigger E2 code -

1. Input power to receiver is missing.

2. Receiver unit fuse is open.

3. Bus cable connecting head unit to receiver is not connected or is defective.

4. Receiver unit is defective.

If vehicle is equipped with factory CD changer -

5. Disconnect changer from head unit. If E2 code disappears, replace CD changer.

400E is correct. You have a faulty sending unit which, if similar to my 300TE 4Matic Wagon, is located in the trunk. Becker, (which is located in New Jersey), will swap you your old unit for a new one at a fraction of the cost for a new unit, which is about $2500. This is a common problem, especially in the wagons due to a design flaw, (gasp!), that put the rear window washer fluid tank next to the sending unit. Over time, spillage from filling and sloshing while driving lands on the unit and corrodes it. When I removed mine, it was practically blue! The radio in the dash may or may not need to be replaced too, but Becker has a swap package for that too. The link to Becker's website is: www.beckerautosound.com. Their is also a question and answer forum, or you could just call them about your problem. Good luck.

Thanks everybody

Thanks everybody for all the good help. Someone has cut a wire/cable that leads to a box mounted to the fender on the left side of the car.
It's like this , I took my car in for oil change and all was fine, used a discount for new customers and tried a different MBZ service center than I usually use. My radio is always on.

When I left it didn't work. I should have returned immediately.

After posting to this site, I opened the hood and found this cable has been "shaved" to expose and cut through all the wire shielding, and the center wire as well! Only being held together by a few strands. Such a sloppy job, and very obvious too. Insulation and reminants of the braded wire sheilding from a two inch section is just laying all arround the fender. The cable is easily removed from the box by simply unpluging it. I can't see immediately what this person had in mind. ???

I am going back to see if it is a single strand of the sheild wire or the center wire that is holding things together. or is everything tangeled together.

Does anybody know what the cable is fore. My first guess is that it looks something like a cable that goes to the radio antenna.

More information is comming. I'll get a better description of the "box" and any part numbers on it.
Thanks again.
