Steve B - Eastman is about 50 miles southeast of Macon and about 100 miles northwest of Savannah. About 20 miles off of Interstate 16. Turn left at Bubba's Amaco and Import Repair Shop - bg (just kidding about Bubba's). Let me know when you come up and I will ride over in my 240D . I am willing to pay $10 to $15 to watch. Stephen already owes me some beer - thank goodness he has a sense of humor.

Hold that thought; Steve!!

While 265 miles is a deterrent, it is certainly not preventative. Remember I still have the issue of the reman transmission that starts in third gear, so I would be reluctant to drive that far even though it seems to work fine in third and fourth. The alternative would be to tow it. I'll have to make arrangements for that.

Last night I thought I was so close and I believe there is more than one issue with this car. Gently moving a fuel pump relay or an OVP or control unit should not kill an engine. I have noticed before that vibration plays a role in "problem".
On cool mornings, temps below 70 degrees F, it would start fine and run good. After 15 minutes at highway speed there is a section of highway that has been "ground" with the little trenches in it. Every morning when I hit that section the check engine light would come on. But what baffles me is that it doesn't always run badly with the light on and sometimes it will stall with the light out. It stands to reason in my mind that if the movement of a wire or component causes symptons of a malfunction, then there is a loss of continuity in that circuit. Visual inspection reveals obvious problems but you can't "see" inside a relay. I am convinced of shortage though. Either OVP ( I have the original and the upgrade) I install gets hot very quickly and the car performs the same with either. Removing the OVP fuse apparently creates open loop and clears the rough idle/stall.

Please, please Stephen, take up Steve B on his generous offer. This is a once a lifetime act of indescribable charity.

This should be acted upon expeditiously. You have no time to waste!

I will contribute to a fund to pay for the gas to get there, or for a tow truck to tow it there.

Do you take pay pal?

Remember, I just want you to be happy.

Let this car be a lasting tribute to the memory of BenzE!

Yall don't get too excited now!

First of all I would never even dream of asking Mr. Brotherton or anyone else to do this for free, especially on a Saturday!. If I choose to take it there I will do so as a regular paying customer. Now if this were to turn into some kind of event that would benefit Mercedesshop.com members, something we could share in pictures and technical writing, then that's another story. I don't know whether Mr. Brotherton would allow a few our members to look over his shoulder but if he would, then that would be something special.
Engatwork; are you up for a roadtrip?
Suginami; You are so kind, thanks for the offer, but I can handle the expenses. I guess I can anyway, I owe Engatwork about ten cases of beer!

I could fix the car and so could others that would be closer. The point to my offer was to show you how I would do it, with the semi-intended consequence that you thusly could do the same in the future. Fixing the car would only be a by-product (and heaven help me if I can't fix it quickly on a Saturday).

The more the merrier. The whole concept is to get some techniques into the group.

Stephen - I'm ready to ride down whenever you are - I've been to Steves place a couple times so I know how to get there. I will just need a couple days notice. If necessary I can bring my tow rope and pull it down behind the 300TD. Also, you will find Gainesville is a pretty neat town - remember it is a college town and there is ALOT of scenery there . Let me know when you are ready .

I can easily understand your frustration and my suggestion to install a pair of Webber carburators to replace the Bosch system was simply to tell you the options exists. In my mind, it's not the way to go.
You are trying to fix this problem with the hit/miss/hit/miss approach which is not the most enjoying and economical. I personnaly have some knowledge/pratice and habilities but I know when to turn to a pro when it surpasses my degree of competence. A year ago, I had a hard cold start/rough cold running I tried to solve by throwing parts at it. I leaned my lesson.
I went to my thrusted/expensive/hard to catch/independent pro who, for $37.00 diagnosed and repaired a loose electrical connection.
I admire your persistance in trying to solve your problem Good luck

I have beaucoup frequent flyer miles. If I had enough notice and my schedule allowed, I would fly in for this one.

CIS 101 and possibly even advanced instruction with the great side benefit of meeting some of my mshop brothers? What an opportunity.

Good luck,

Guys,

Keep us posted as to whether this "event" actually happens. I'm about to be unemployed so time isn't an issue. With some amount of rationalization, I could probably convince my wife that driving from NJ to FL isn't entirely crazy.
