190e Temperature Switches, please help
Hi,
I have a 1988 190e 2.3, I already posted a similar question and people tried to help but I did not phrase it correctly. Please see photo located at: http://machnumber2.50megs.com/photos/benztemp.jpg Marked #1 in the photo is a red temperature switch. Is this switch supposed to control the aux fan or the belt fan (electromechanical)? At what temperature should this fan be activated? Marked #2 in the photo is a blue temperature switch, which fan should this one activate? At what temperature should this fan be activated? Marked #3 is a temperature sender, I think I figured out that this one just sends the temperature to the instrument panal. Because the blue and red plugs are both 2 prong, I am concerned that that they may have been accidently interchanged and plugged into the wrong socket. I cannot say enough good things about this site, it has helped me so much. People here really put in a real effort, this is one of the best internet experiences I have ever had. Thank you for all of your efforts.

HI Mach.
The red switch, if the same as the 190e i have is for the Electromagnetic fan, the one behind the rad in the engine bay. This one activates at about 100 degrees and shuts off at about 90 degrees. Allow a variance for an older switch. The blue one (which i havent got) would be for the aux fans. I think these have a dual purpose, they come on when the aircon is activated, plus they also come on if the standard fan isnt cooling enough, ie on a particularly hot day. I would imagine they should come on at about 105-110 degrees and shut off at 100. |

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but I'm seeing a similar cooling problem on my girlfriend's 1988 190e 2.3. I was planning on replacing the thermal switch, and when I looked under the hood, I had one red sensor and one blue sensor, both 2-prong, just like in the pic posted originally by Machnumber2.
I looked in the Performance Products catalog, and they list both sensors. I was just hoping someone could confirm Matt's reply - that the red sensor is the 100 deg. fan switch, and the blue one is for aux. fans.... The catalog doesn't specify which is which, I'll probably just replace both but wanted to be sure before I ordered anything! I apologize if the answer may be buried in an old post - I found this one by searching, but can't play for too long with the boss always over my shoulder! Thanks in advance, Tom |
