Hello -
On my '81 300SD (190,000) -
What should I look for and replace when poking around the air cleaner (Besides the filter) ?
There are several hoses coming and going from the air cleaner housing, some with oil seepage.
Thanks for your help.

On a turbo diesel a light coating of oil in the inside of some ofthe hoses is normal. One thing to check on the air cleaner is the rubber mounts that hold the air cleaner housing to the engine. Over time they do tend to break.

Yes, as stated previously, a light coating of oil would be normal, plus breaking air filter housing mounts are a constant source of irratation the the owner of a m617 turbo engine. The mounting bracket also breaks off at the back. or the threaded holes become rounded out (with the latter you can use a nut/washer). I have seen air filters that are completely saturated in oil, especially on engines that are in poor shape (lots of blowby). Final note: it is not uncommon to have to repair at least the mounts on a yearly basis.

Thanks for your help !!

I think the rubber "cushions" are broken.
Although they seem to be provide dampening, the whole air filter housing comes up freely when I lift it...
I'm guessing the cushions also provide connection of the housing to the seat ?

Yes and it is possible for the mounting bracket to break as well. When you take off the whole housing to do your repair, be sure to reach up under the housing when re-installing and reconnect the oil return line so you don't have and oil leak after the repair.

I just replaced 2 of the 3 filter housing mounting brackets on my 1982 300D.

Those are *****es to replace!

The treads were gone on my bracket, so I had to use some very unusual positionning of my wratchet wrench to hold on to the nut and washer from below. Make sure you have a small ratchet handy in case you need to do this.

I think the first thing is to open the top of the filter housing and take it from there.
Need to wait until I can be freed up from my two young boys.
Where can I order MB repair manual ?
I already own the light green maintenance manual.
I do appreciate all the responses I'm getting.
Waited over 10 years for a 126 SD.

You can get a chassis repair manual from MBUSA for $55.00. The engine manual's have been discontined....they are in the process of converting over the CDRom, but they haven't completed the 126 chassis yet. If you're interested in the chassis manual, call 1-800-FOR-MERC
Good Luck, Paula
