Diff noise. Any solutions?

Hi,
I just bought a 92 230E manual with only 40k miles on the clock.
The car has a full service record from MB and looks and smells like new. Problem is when I drive at +- 40-50 mph and the engine is just not pulling there is a whinning noise from the rear. As soon as I accelerate or decelerate, the noise dissapears. Could a diff fail at such low milage? Could it be adjusted? What about additives? (Dont really like this option!!!!)

I had the same problem on my 560SEC. It was the rear wheel bearings. It`s not a DIY, cost about $1000.00 at the dealer.
If you can find someone who has done it , it may be less. This is a bear of job. Who ever does it, needs the right tools, and the right training.

John
