Muffler life??
What's the "normal" life expectancy for a center or rear muffler on a 300E?? I know there are many variables; highway driving, around town driving, climate etc.
My 300E was 8 years old with 43,000 miles when I bought it. It was driven by a little old lady and with the exception of a round trip to Florida every year, she averaged 3,000 miles a year. I replaced the exhaust shortly after buying the car so the mufflers are about 4 1/2 years old with about 70,000 miles on them. The center muffler has a hole. The rear is perfect. Did I get a bum center muffler or what?? Both are OEM.

I think the units that come with the cars or are sold by the dealers will get about 70,000 to 90,000 miles. That is why I bought a system from Timevalve (www.timevalve.com) which has a lifetime warranty. I recently took the car back to the Timevalve shop, which happens to be relatively close in Connecticut, and they repaired some leaks free of charge, without any questions or paperwork. It depends on where you live.
In the 25 years I've lived in sunny So Cal I've never changed a muffler I didn't break. When I lived on the rusty side of the Mississippi it was a regular task.

It depends on where you live. I recently had to replace both the resonator and muffler on a '91 300E because the weld going into the muffler had rusted through. Except for the weld, the exhaust system was fine. This car had spent 10 years in Minnesota.
I suppose I could have had it welded but by the time I discovered how bad it was, it was too late. The original exhaust system is one piece after the catalytic converter. The MB replacement was in two pieces. I now live in Arizona and expect the exhaust to last forever.

It depends on where you live, how you drive the car, whether it's gas or diesel. Generally, cold weather and/or short trips are bad - they permit condensation inside the exhaust system, which rusts it from the inside out. Gasoline engines are harder on exhaust systems as well. As a reference, my former (now owned by a friend) 1984 300D still has the original factory front and center exhaust sections, though the tailpipe section with the rear muffler has been replaced. That car has more than 250K miles on it! My 1987 300TD had the entire original exhaust system when it was replaced under the trap-ox recall; that was in 1999.
