Best Windshield Wipers?
 

any strong opinions on best replacement wipers for my model? (W210).

As others have suggested, I've always used alcohol to clean the smut buildup on wiper blades. Some have said alcohol isn't good for the elastomer compound. Any comments?

Fastlane sells the Bosch inserts for a song. They work great with an application of RainX to your windshield. No squeaking...none!

The Bosch ones that you have to re-use the metal strips are the best.

Definitely BOSCH! All three of my MBs are clad with them and no problems with skipping or smearing.

I have no trouble finding them at Pep Boys, or Auto Zone, so I would think they are readily available.

Get the inserts only unless the assemblies are shot...if you look closely at the OEM units, the vehicle model is embossed on each wiper assembly.

The 210 chassis takes a 25" blade, right? I've never seen such a thing at a McParts store - are y'all buying them in the aftermarket? The 124 chassis uses a 24" blade. Like most everyone else, I'm using a Bosch microedge. Works great - no smearing, quiet, lasts a long time. It doesn't rain a heckuvalot here in Dallas, so I usually change them ~2 years, and they aren't really worn out at that point.

Imagine my dismay when clipping in a new refill on the W124, a most annoying squeak made it's presence known which wasn't there before. I've machine polished the glass with Griot's Glass polish, then applied rain-x twice thinking that would get rid of the squeak - it didn't.

Is there a trick to inserting the blade properly? One condition I'm surprised of given my car's mileage is that the windshield is horribly pitted (I've seen better glass on cars with double my mileage). would this uneven surface cause the squeaking?

This is very annoying to say the least, and with the rainy-season coming (well, sometime anyway), I'd like to keep myself and my wife sane :eek:

I bought a pair (Bosch) that squeaked for two years before replacing them again (also Bosch). The second pair did not squeak at all. And my W124 windshield is FAR from blemish-free!

Perhaps the wiper inventory in some stores is a bit more aged than others?

I just ordered some inserts from Fastlane, but the manufacturer was listed as "SWF." Does anyone know anything about this company? I was hoping for Bosch, although I stopped at an auto parts store today and the sales guy said he'd heard Bosch was getting out of selling inserts.

The tension that's applied to the wiper blade/rubber insert by the wiper arm needs to be taken into consideration as the car grows older.

I just replaced the drivers side arm on an 11 yr. old 126 car and was impressed by the increased pressure the drivers side now has vs. the pressure on the passenger side.

If the wiper arms are weak, the rubber insert installed in the blade will be far less effective.
