Coming back from lunch today I had to break really hard and a loud "punk" sound was heard from the driver's side front wheel. Loud enough that the passenger heard it, too. Afterwards, the brakes were softer and the car leaned to the passenger side when breaking. Didn't have very long to go so it's now parked in the office parking.

I figure the breaking system for the front driver/rear passenger breaks is blown somehow. What should I check? I checked the wheels and no fluid seemed to have come out but there were some small rusty debris at the bottom of the front rim. Anywhere else I should check for leakage? What could explain the noise?

I would REALLY appreciate any comments on this. I'd like to check it out before leaving today to see where the damage might be. Any pointer will reward their sender with my eternal gratitude.

Thanks in advance

Nicolas

Re-hello

Don't bother sending suggestions: I just had time to check the front driver's brake and the disk has broken away from its hub, the part that is bolted to the wheel hub. Scary stuff...

Has anyone ever seen this? Sounds odd to me that it would happen.

Yes but only on a rotor that was way below min specs. Min thickness is 10.8mm
