Hello
I love my 81 300SD but have always wondered about MB's 6-cylinder gas models. I particularily like the looks of the 1990 300SE.
I know they are different creatures but how are the 126 series 6-cylinder sedans ?
Thanks
Alan

I own a 1990 300SE and I love it. It is an awesome car in every way but one- acceleration. You probably are used to it if you own a 300SD (I had a 300CD) and the gas engine is alot quieter and smoother. But if you're only looking for improved acceleration, don't go with a 6 cylinder.

Hi, Joe -

Yes, acceleration is kindof sluggish when starting out, but it sure is a nice car.
Anyway, routine maintenance and that's it ?

This is an ideal car if the engine was kept up. Look under the oil cap with a flash light for signs of oil bakeage such as black sludge on the top of the bolts.

Alan,
So far only routine maintenence, although I've only had it for a few months. It's an absoultely MINT black with grey leather, I mean MINT inside and out, 96,000 miles, and I paid $13,000 for it! What could you possibly buy for $13,000 that would be even close to this car. It's got to be the bargain of the century!
Good luck!

Curious why you wouldn't be interested in a 6cyl Diesel (especially the 1986-87), instead of the gas version. They have great performance and fantastic fuel economy. I have driven the gas 6cyl and I honestly believe mine is quicker, would love to run mine against a gas 6 cyl version.

How does the 6 cylinder diesels cars compare to the 126/617 (5 cylinder) engine cars in terms of reliability/durability ? Speed/Power is secondary issue for me as long it can cruise all day and get 500-600 miles out of tank.

Only in fantasy land is a 300SDL quicker than a 300SEL. To 60MPH an SEL is about 4 sec quicker than the SDL.
