a clanging like sound by the alternator-Help!!

I just came back from trip to Vegas. Had lots of fun but now when the car is in idle and with hood up, I can hear a clanging sound coming from close to the alternator. Could this be my timing chain or something else???

The car has 204K and runs very smooth. Is it time for some kind of maintenance?

noises

I had the same problem with my 300se and the starter wiring harness was the problem. Corrision had gotten to it, and it was not engaging into the gear.

What do u mean by the starter engaging?

Thanks!

If your car is equipped with a air pump the clutch idler might be on its way out. The fan bearing bracket and tensioner shocks will sound like a rock is in there too. Does it clank cold? (when the air pump is enguged)

I will check

Yesterday I came home from work and had to adjust my eurolights a bit and heard it. The engine was warm.

Check the belt shock and bearing bracket first, then look at the idler on the air pump clutch.

my mechanic thinks it is the pulley

I took my car in for a look and the sound is faint still but it is coming from where the pulley is by the alternator.

If I have to change this, it would be the first time and I have 204K mi. on my 190E 2.6.

Is this normal? Could it also be the water pump? How long does a water pump last?
