It's actually a replacement grill (I found one on Ebay and have seen several since). I bought one they said was for a '94/'95. Don't think so!!! It took about 12 hours of recutting chrome strips, etc to make it fit. Then lots of epoxy to hold it in place. 6 months later its coming apart.
Here was the problem: The vents are a fairly soft plastic with little tabs that act like a track to hold the chrome strips in place. It those tabs ran the whole length of vent, then the chrome would stay put. Instead, there's just a tab about every 6 inches. So, not a good snug, continuous fit. Next, at the outer edges of the vents the chrome is held in place by rubber bands. A couple weeks in the sun, run, etc., the bands became brittle, then broke and finally fell off. My very biased opinion: If the grill was for a '94/'95 then it was a peice of crap. If it was really for a '93 or earlier and the seller didn't know it, then it would probably be okay on a '93 or earlier. The problem with '94/95 is that the has a different curl/bend/profile than the '93s and earlier, so making it have the right curvature put some pressure on the vents & chrome - hence my problems. The solution (someday): One Sunday when there's 4 football games back to back, I'm going to sit down in front of the TV with about 20 tubs of epoxy and build up the undersides of the chrome grill to hold the vents perfect in place. It's really not that hard, you use the epoxy that is like clay and just mold everything into place. If you can see any of the epoxy from the exterior, take a little water on your finger and smooth it out. Follow by alittle black paint. When you pop the hood, the back side of grill looks pretty bad, but from the front you'd never know. The hardest part of initial install was cutting the chrome pieces, they had to be at slight angles - very hard to do with a little dremmal tool. Almost forgot, the pieces held in by epoxy - tough as nails, no problems there. It's every other point without epoxy! |

"600 look" grille for W124
The grill you refer about on the picture is what used to be called a "600 look" upgrade grill for the W124 series.
I bought one from Precision Auto Designs (see picture below). The grill was a direct fit for my 95 E320T and came in a box labelled as an original M-B part. No clippings, no cuttings, it fitted right in. It also looks great. The company changed names and now goes under Performance Products (www.************************), although I do not see it their current catalog now. The grill was called the "600 look" because at the time (94-95) only the S600 came standard with such a grill. Later on, when the Avantgarde models were introduced on the W210, the same look was copied. A. Rosich S320, 1998 E320T, 1995 |

Yes.........That's the one.
I called on Performance Products to see if they still offer this grill and waiting for their response.
Please tell me, and please forgive me if this sounds like a silly question, but what's the "T" in E-320T. Turbo??? I haven't heard of a 94 or 95' E-320 turbo's so it really threw me. Factory or aftermarket? Please tell me more??????? TIA DSR |

No big thing, the T stands for "Touring" (= station wagon).
Before Mercedes adopted the new nomenclature, the wagons were known as 200T/200TE/230TE/300TE/200TD/250TD/300TD in the W124 series, which by the way, to be more precise, in this series the wagon chassis series is internally known as S124 (no relation to the S class). In the final two years of the S124 production, the series were renamed E200/E220/E280/E320/E250 (diesel)/E300 (diesel)/E300 (turbodiesel). Hence, people added the "T" at the end (ex. E320T) to clarify they were talking about the wagon. Mercedes-Benz, except for the well known Turbo Diesels is not very fond of turbos on gasoline engines. They preffer the Kompressor units (like the SLK230). I actually cannot recall a single M-B high production turbo gasoline engine in the last four decades. A. Rosich S320, 1998 E320T, 1995 |

I agree that MB seems to prefer supercharging for spark ignition engines. Of course, that may be changing with the new twin turbo just-shy-of-500hp V-12 engine for the 600's, but those are hardly what one would classify as "high production."

I thought "T" stood for "transport"
