I have a 1992 SL500 that sometimes hesitates on normal takeoff..it does not do it all the time but it is very annoying when it happens..you press the gas then it hesitates and goes..and occasionally..it suges while idling

hesitation

throttle body and sensor might be needing some cleaning, make sure that you are only using premium unleaded, add a can of chevron techron injection cleaner, fuel filter change, air filter change.

I had a similar problem once in my 560 SL, it "coughs" once in a while. Semi-rough idling, so I did all of the above and it apparently fixed the problem. What I would have done differently though is do it one at a time and see which one would actually fix the symptom, so it can be a learning experience for you as well.

Good luck

Regards

While you are down there check your fuel accumulator. Remove small hose on accumulator, there shouldn't be any fuel coming out with the engine running.

Hesitation can also be casued by distributor caps, rotors, wires. When was the last tune up?

hesitation and surging

it's either the gas can't get in due to fuel FILTER AND/OR DIRTY FUEL INJECTORS, DROP IN FUEL PRESSURE, CLOGGED AIR CLEANER , OR just needs a tune up.

I would put a can of chevron techron in a full tank of super dupper premium gas and see if there's a difference. If there is, then it's the fuel system .

the surging issue on the other hand might be a vaccum leak issue.
A good MBZ shop should be able to diagnose this correctly.

Good luck

cooler weather

wow, now that's interesting. I'm now exploring something that is actually a mystery to me, BUT..... Using the ol' common sense, we can venture into a few possibilities. 1)Warm weather= warmer engine. Timing changes. 2) Warm weather= gasoline vapors in the line. pressure settings change. Mind you , these are wild a** guesses. What do you think?

I hope someone gives us a better response than mine.- I'd like to learn something myself.

ciao
