Resetting the Error Message
 

I have a two questions. I own a 1998 E320. When changing the brake pads, do the sensors have to be replaced as well? Secondly, I had a defective light that I replaced but the error message remains on my dash display. How do you remove the error message? Thanks

I replace the sensors if cut.

Let the cluster go to sleep and the message sould go away. There is also a procedure in the owners manual for doing this with the l/h button but damned if I can remember it. :-)

it's not clear which error lgiht your talking about.is it the lamp out display?if it is,make sure you replace the bulb with the proper bulb.this is critical.go to the dealership to get correct bulb

I did purchase the lamp at the dealership. The error light display (on my dash were you toggle between the odometer and the error message) stills says "lamp defective" even though the lamp appears to be working. I will check the owners manual to see if I can find the procedure that Joe P is referring to. Will get back to you after that.

There is no resetting procedure. If you replace the bulb and then start the car, then switch on the light system which had the problem, there will be no more error message if the problem is fixed. Obviously there is another light which is out.
Here is the best procedure:
Start car, all lights out. Step on the brake. If you get an error message a brake light is out.
Foot still on the brake, shift into reverse. if you now get an error message a reverse lamp is inop.
Tranmission in park now, foot off the brake.
Turn the headlamp switch to the first notch (parking lights)
If you get an error message now, you need to check: The front parking lights (small oval lamps on the front), the front side markers (amber ones on side of bumper), the rear tail lamps (2 bulbs each side) AND the license plate lamps, there are 2 of these.
Next turn on the headlamps and look for error message, then the front and rear foglamps, then the high beam headlamps.

On the brake pad sensors, if you replaced the pads before the brake pad warning message came up, they should be reuseable. if the warning meaasge came up in the instrument cluster, you'll need at least one, possibly both.

I will try the process as you described and hopefully will find my problem light. With respect to the brake pads, the error message had come on so it looks like I need to replace the sensors as well. Thanks for your help.
