300E's pass. side headlight wiper blows fuse...

Ok...so, when i bought this car, the headlight wiper motors were disconnected by the previous owner. I plugged them in one after the other and only the passenger side motor blows the #3 fuse. I took both motors out, opened them up, and cleaned them (even though they looked really clean inside) and the passenger-side motor still blows the fuse when hooked up and the parking lights are turned on. My question is basically, do I just need a new right-side motor, or is there some other problem (like a bad ground)??? Any ideas? -- Mike

P.S. - the headlight washers are also not working....i'm guessing it needs a new headlight washer pump (the windshield pump works)...would this have anything to do with the blown fuse?

Start checking your harness and check the amperage draw of the wiper motor. Does it blow on activation of the wiper or when the parking lights are turned on?

The h-lamp washer pump will stay on (switch, harness, wiper motor) and in most cases gets unplugged. First step is to make sure both motors on the tank are plugged in.

Assuming all your connections are OK, it sounds like your wiper motor is in need or repair or replacement, since if it's drawing excessive current, the motor rotor might be frozen. If I recall correctly, it's the passenger side motor that not only controls the wiper, but also switches on and off the pump motor at certain intervals too. Apparently, corrosion is a common problem in the motor units, esp. after a lot of years.

If you have the time and inclination, there is a detailed explanation by Jon Kanas in Colorado of the MBCA for disassemby and repair of the W124 headlamp wiper motor at:

Personally, I had one that I spent numerous hours on (it had erratic operation), and I never did get it fixed properly. Ended up buying a new one instead. But, your's might be worth a try.

good luck...dan

Someone from another thread recommended this one. I wanted to give the correct url.

Thanks, this helps!
