Unhappy 89 300SE Guage Cluster Issue

1989 300 SE. One day the guage cluster stopped working.
Idiot lights under cluster function, clock and directional signals function, but nothing else (speedo - tach - oil pressure - fuel).
All of the visible fuses in the box (front of firewall - engine bay) look in good order. I disconnected some VDO 8 pin block under the dash (drivers side) and was able to get them all to work, until I restarted it. Now I am back to no guages.
Any ideas?

Sure sounds like a bad fuse or connection somewhere. Even though they look good, it wouldn't hurt to change all of the fuses. You may be pleasently surpised.
