My trip odometer isnt working it seems to be stuck to 001.

There is a rod inside the speedo that does slide out. I have repaired several in house for the shop I work for.

Same problem with my 81 300SD.

The trip odometer has not operated since being reset to zero - not sure how long ago.

Same "rod sliding out" problem ?

Also, will this lead to the odometer failing ?

On my 1987 260E the trip odometer also stuck at 001, and the dealer service recognized the problem as being "very typical." Then he quoted me $257 to repair it! If it's such a common thing as a rod slipping, should it be this expensive to repair?

Well you have to remove the cluster and D&A to to get to the inner workings of the speedo. Common? YES Cheap? NO

Here's my 2 cents, hope it'll work for everyone.

Try continously pressing on the reset button while driving for maybe half a mile then release the reset knob. This worked for me, don't know why.

Hmm....wouldn't this (possibly) damage the gears ? I suppose you could press it in before the car starts rolling. I'll have to try it before trying to unhook the cluster.

My 86' 300E did the same, it was in fact the rod, or axle that runs through the number wheels, it simply worked it's way out of one of the side supports and thus dropped the gears away from each other.
Now this really is not a diffucult job to repair. Removeing the inst. cluster the first time is not easy due to sticky rubber pads, once removed, start unscrewing the back of the cluster, it's pretty straight forward, just remember you DO NOT need to remove the speedo needle and speedo face plate to access the odometer. Flip it over and you will see exactly whats wrong, if in fact the axle has slipped out. I used a little glue on each end of the axle to keep it from happpening again.
BTW try not to touch the speedo face there's nothing worse than having to look at your big thumb print over the 10 MPH mark after you put it all together.

I'm with budkorn, as it's worked in my 300TE. Seems like if I try to reset it when I'm not moving, it never kicks in but makes an audible (and annoying) "click" every few seconds. I hold the button in while moving, and eventually it catches and I'm on my way.

Pain in the butt, so I simply don't use the trip odo often. However, I've got a few illumination bulbs out in the cluster so I'll deal with it then.

On the push, push, and push again to get the odo. to reset without sticking, or in other words, getting all the # to line up so it does not stick and click. I found the problem is that the stem that you are pushing on does not appear to be long enough. When you take the unit apart and can reset without the stop restriction it works perfectly every time, first time. I tried to do some slight bending of a fork peice in there, I really wanted to simply lengthen the push rod, but do to the fact this is also the control for the dash lght dimmer, theres no room for that. Anyway no good fix for that litte problem. If you take yours apart and spend some time looking at it you might come up with something better than bending the potmetal fork, (very scary), but it did help mine.

From a tech, it should reset at any time driving or not engine driving or not. If not, the pin has slipped.
