I just changed the front disks on my 82 300D and would like to know what you guys think of the procedure Haynes (sorry, no better manual for now...) gives to tighten the lockable front hub nuts: Spin the hub while tightening the lockable nut. When the hub starts giving resistance, stop tightening, back off 1/3 of a turn and lock the bolt. That's it.
So, any comments? I'd rather not ruin my bearings but I'm not sure if I can get my hands on a radial meter. If I have to bring it in to a shop to have the bearings checked I will, but I'd rather not. Any help appreciated. Nicolas ------------------ 1982 300D - http://members.xoom.com/nicodore/ |

The rule of thumb is about 0 play with NO preload on the bearing. If you tighten it by hand and pull the rotor toward and away from you until you feel 0 movement, you will be fine. I don't think it would be possible to over tighten by hand. Then lock them down.
