Did I short out my fuel pump?

1991 300SEL, changed fuel filter, started car to inspect for leaks and found one. Turned car off and tighted the banjo fitting on the filter. Started car again, leak was less so I tighted it some more, while car was running. Still a little drip from the fuel pump banjo fitting. I thought to tighted bango fitting on the pump, (I thought to myself did I loosen it while removing the filter?), wrench touches something on the pump, pump stops, car dies, will not start again, rats I have screwed up.

What is my punishment? Could the fuel pump relay be the problem, fuel pump perhaps. Tell me a fuse is blown somewhere?

I feel like an idiot.

You probably shorted the fuel pump and blew the fuel pump relay.

It is a big black box inside the fuse box. Check your fuses while you are there but it is probably the relay.

By the way, make sure that when you replaced the fuel pump that you put back the seal ring(s). You should not have to tighten that bolt so hard.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will pull that relay and take a look at it. Its Saturday night need to travel Monday morning early, hope I can salvage this deal.

Regrading the leak, I used two brass washers that came with the pump. The old washers were not brass and were little smaller. I will try to reuse the older washer and see what happens.

Thanks again.

The fuel relays can be repaired if you are astute with a soldering iron.

Open the relay, look for a broken connection in the PC board. it will be obvious to you. It is usually right along the bottom edge. Resolder the break. VIOLA!

I see three black boxes in the fuse box case, and some clear plastic, metal and green boxes. I pulled the medium size black box, its about the size of pack of cigs from the top but shorter and opened it up. I could not see any damage.

I would check the fuses first.
