New mercedes sucks

Well, i got a 89 560 sl, great car not a problem yet, great. On that idea i got me a new A160, o boy did i make a mistake!!!
At 20000kms @ 12000 milles, the gear box had to be replaced, it took the 6 weeks to fix it, mean while the wife had no car, she told me to get a toyota, but my heart was set on MB, well i said this could happen to any one. A year latter an 20000km more the car left me on the side of the road, no more warranty, took it to the dealer, the idler polley bearing, has to be replaced, plus since i tryed to starte iti an the engine was not turning, i **** the starter an the flywheel, o boy they said the will try cortesy, it took then at this electronic age 3 week to get an awnser back from brazil. They will go 50/50 i agreed, a week later they call me to said that brazil did not have the parts, they would have to come from germany, o **** that would be another 2 weeks at least. I got a lawer at the company, i have a got one for him. I dont want that pice of **** any more, in 2 years it has spent @ 8 weeks at the dealer, plus there is no loaner. Come to think about it i paid for that crap more tha a 6 cyl camry would have cost me.
Nor only that my wife keeps on remainding me, we never ha a problem with the 3 lexus we onwned previusly even thoug the arwe no lexus dealer around here. sorry for the rant but i have come to the conclusion that the only quality left on a mercedes is the name. I gess i shoulde fell that bad, the guy sitting next to me bougth a mercedes for the same reason i did, but he got a new s500 in here @ $130000 it has been in the shop 3 times in the last 10000kms.

I'm sorry to read about your bad luck. That's exactly what it is. This kind of things happens with ALL brands. It could've happened with a Toyota as well.

Sorry for your bad luck,

I cant say for sure if the new ones do or not but looking at the news groups and the different mercedes sites, mercedesshop, benzsports, etc, etc Im at the conclusion that Mercedes cars are very stylish but they are living off of the reputation they had years ago when the other car companies were making junk and mercedes really made some simple but strong cars.

Ive owned toyotas and mercedes all my driving life and I still love the feel of a mercedes but I must admit things broke that shouldnt have. My toyotas never really broke that much but they didnt drive like a mercedes or offer the safety that a mercedes does. I still love driving Mercedes but my next car will be a Audi, Hell I cant aford the CL and the new ones look like hondas.

On the Lexus site I ve noticed they never talk about breakdowns and idle problems, Ac going out. Im not a Lexus Lover Just my thoughts. What do you think?

for a third the price of a new MB you could buy an 81 to 85 300 SD or an 81 to 91 560 SEl or any number of other fine older models and put it in like new condition ,have the rather simple maintence done and drive in classic luxury ample perfomance and style reconized the world over.......I would rather not have a car that talks to me corrects my
oversteer and brakes if I get to close to the car in front of me . I don't need to have a vehicle that answers my my E mail and never lets me get lost in a strange city.........

William - we may live on the totally opposite side of the country but we think JUST alike when it comes to car ownership.

i agree that newer MBs are not built like the old ones. these days they are more focused on selling more cars and incorporate a lot of electronic "toys" instead of the older reliable cars.

I know people that bought brand new benzs and next yr models and they have to constantly go back to the shop. Most of these owners say they will never get another MB again. When a customer buys a new mercedes and spends $40k or more and the power window doesnt work or the radio doesnt work, or the interior rattles, this is just rediculous.

Remember the 98-99 M class problems? how about the FSS/conventional oil problem? remember the article in the wall stree journal on mbs? remember mercedes trying to shut down mercedesshop.com? I love this forum and feel its very helpful but wasnt happy about them trying to shut it down.

In my opinion in 10 years MB is going to have a whole new "image".

Back in 1982 my 300SD cost $42,000cnd, a Cadillac sold for less than $20k. At the same time Detroit was learning how to make things cheaper and still have them operate. Mercedes was still fitting their cars together by hand and making every single item servicable. So, you could spend your money and drive it at least 2x if not more than your comparable American luxury car. Along come the '90's. Luzury is not limited to 2 or 3 makers anymore. Mercedes has no choice but to be competative. Would you spend 3 times more for a Benz now? Who can afford it. Of course MB has gotten cheaper. They are built by robots now like everything else, gone for electronic gadgetry and so on to the point where they are no better buy now than a new Caddy. I can fix just about anything on my 300SD. I can fix very little on my '97 Deville and I am sure a '03 is even more complicated. It is a sad statement for autos.

Cheers

I got to say, i run a company, it has 8 cars, over the year we had had the chance to try most everything, the cars get replaced every 3 years at @ 100.000 miles, most of the cars are small cars, exept for the ones we, the family drives.

1995 Gran marquis, crap
1998 Grand blazer, crap
1995 Mitsubishi Galant lots of problem with inyection system
2000 Nisan Quest great untill wife totaled
2002 Ford explorer not a problem yet
2002 Ford ranger not a problem
2002 Ford F150 not a problem
2002 Ford F150 extcab not a problem 2 of them
1998 toyota starlet 120.000 milles not a problem yet
1996 lexus gs 300 sold it with 50.000 milles never a problem
1998 lexus gs 400 sold it @ 40000 milles never a problem
1998 lexus rx 300 sold it @ 40000 milles never a problem
1998 toyota hilux 80000 milles not a problem
1999 hilux 60000 not a problem
2002 toyota yaris (echo) not a problem
1992 Honda accord sold it @ 90.000 never a problem
1989 Mercedes 560 sl 68000 milles love it very nice car. Iwill never sell it.

2000 Mercedes A160 25.000 milles only problems

Make a note we dont have lexus dealers in venezuela, but who needs it.
Of the americans i do like the Ford F-150 very nice truck

I do like the felling of a mercedes, but i hate the felling when it leaves me on the side of the road, it only gets worst after a couple of weeks at the dealer.

I am considering a good used 560sec 1991. After that i dont think a mercedes is worth the problems.

a Cadillac sold for less than $20k

This is true. I remember around that time, I was about 10, seeing caddys advertised for "still under $11k" brand spankin' new. If the mercedes was 42k, I was just thinking, wow, what a difference. But as we know know, these cars were well worth the money. Meantime, Buciraco, I would go buy that Toyota. Your wife may not be living the high life in a mb anymore, but even if the same things go wrong with the toyota, it will cost a lot less and best of all, your wife will not be as mad at you. My .02.

Now this will surely get some ticked but my '84 diesel Celebrity is dirt simple, easy to fix, goes like stink, gets good mileage and is BUTT Ugly. The only reason I bought it was it was cheap and to get a diesel Benz for that year and miles would cost much more. Just an indication as to how well the older MB hold their value and for good reason. I doubt that a 2003 MB will retain the same value 20 years from now.

I beleive it was around earlier this year, if you do a search on the forum you should find a few threads on it.

Bascially MB said that mercedesshop.com the name is decieving and makes it sound like its a mercedes authroized repair shop or some bull***** and wanted to shut it down.

In my honest opinion, i think that mb is pissed because we owners and technicans are getting together and figuring out whats wrong with the cars and there service department is losing business over it. and there parts department is losing revenue cause mbshop sells parts cheaper. One or two people doesnt make a differnce but when you have thousands of us, think of the potential revenue they lost.

Thats just what I think, because i do NOT think that the name mercedesshop.com is deciving or imply an authorized service center.

Is this how the company expect to reward its customers? by shutting down the number 1 technical mb site on the internet?

well, I'm oversimplifying, but after my 190D 2.2 I will probably NEVER own MB again. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy driving it and every time something goes wrong it's like a Jeopardy : for a $300 the answer is..... Also, for a 17-years old car it runs great (albeit at 155K miles it better!!).
However, My wife has a 1996 Stang 3.8l. It kinda feels like MB but is not quite so woefully underpowered. She bought the Stang new and did the standard warranty stuff (oil filters at the prescribed intervals). The only time ANYTHING went bad on the Stang was at 20K mi when she run over the ditch and needed a new rad and at 80 Kmi when the clutch pressure plate spring collapsed (still made it to the shop) and when I bent a tie rod on a pothole.

The first time the car had a tuneup was at a 100K mi when I replaced the plugs and ignition wires (really did not need it). now at a 110K mi I replaced fuel filter and put in a new K&N air filter. That is all of the maintenance the car ever had or needed. O, yeah, for the first time I think I will flush the cooling system (had the same coolant since 1998- guess what-no overheating and the water pump is jest fiiiiiiinnneeee). With all the repairs and standard maint my wife spent about as much since 1996 as I spent in the first year owning 190 (that would be July 2000 through July 2001). The total standard yearly maintenance cost of the Stang is about the same as two oil changes in my Merc. The Stang has a timing chain, so I don't have to touch that for another couple of years. I fully expect to drive it without ANY major repairs past 200K mi.

So, draw your own conclusions and please-spare me the mantra about older "luxury" car and how "stylish" it is to drive an MB. It wears thin, specifically when I hear my co-workers snicker seeing me in the company parking lot with my hood up and fixing that "reliable German luxury sedan" - yet again. I think I'm going to swap the cars with my wife.

Draw your own conclusions
