rear heat

82 300 sd Am I supposed to be able to get hot air to blow out of my back seat vent that runs under the console. I can open it and get cold air blowing well out of it. Checked the archives and couldn't find anything on it. The rest of my heater controls do what they are supposed to [for the most part]. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't know -- the heat ducts are under the front seats for rear heat, don't know if the console vent is for heat or works just like the center vents on dash.

If you are supposed to get heat out there, you may have a bad vac servo in the dash.

The vent at the rear of the center console is a fresh air vent only. Onpening it allows fresh air to the rear cabin. For winter use simnply close it. The heat comes out from under the seats.

Stu,

Thanks for making this post as I've been troubled by the same question on my 560SEL.

Mike,

From playing around in my car, it seems that the rear vent in the console will do cooled air with the A/C on during the summer. Is this correct? Also, where are the ducts for the heat? I haven't seen anything under the seats yet and the duct work under the front carpets seems to run back into the console, not under the seats.

Thanks

The rear heater vents are under the front seats (I knew I shoulda taken a picture while I had the seats out!!!). You might be able to see them if you raise the seat as high as it will go and put it full forward. On the 560 (or any with seat heaters) the relay for the seat heaters attaches to the bottom of the vents. The ductwork for the rear vents are those large flat plenums that run under the carper. They actually go up along the tranny hump, where they mate to the duct coming out of the heater box.

The rear center vent is attached to a "Y" plenum which runs up into the dash. The control flap is located there as well, and is operated via a two piece cable. I think this plenum attaches at the evap box, which might account for some cooling, but mostly all that comes out of the rear center is fresh air.

Mike,

Thanks for the clarification. I'll go check things out at lunch time. This has saved me some major headaches as I was going to start pulling things appart to see what was wrong when it turns out nothing is wrong!
