ANOTHER Oxygen Sensor Question!
OK....I went to Auto Zone and purchased an O2 sensor for a 1990 Ford Mustang 302. I understand that the clip on the end has to come off in order to splice the new sensor onto the old leads. I'm just not shure what wires should match up. Does anybody have a tip on this? BTW this is going into a 1987 420SEL. Are there any compatability issues that I should know about? Thanks!

Why an O2 sensor for a Ford in a Benz? If you buy the correct Bosch or OEM MB one you won't have to do anything but install and screw in the plug....what are they? ...like around $100 for the correct part.

Are the Ford sensors pre-heated? Will they pass emission tests? How much cheaper are the Ford sensors over the real thing?

Dude, the Mustang 5.0 sensor will nor cause any problems on your car. Just match up the two white wires and the one black wire and you will have no problem. The Mustang O2 sensor should be around $40. Do a search on Mustang O2 and it will confirm the same.
Not a difficult procedure..

Following up a question on another old O2 thread:
The Mustang O2 sensor mentioned so much is a three wire unit, is there any generic replacements for the 4 wire O2 sensors used in later model cars, like my 1994 E320. Thanks, John |

Any old O2 in a storm. The O2 sensor technology is only done about four different was that I know of with the MB 1v chemical generator about the most common.
Just the fact that it works on the same voltage won't get it on OBDII cars where the controller actually tests the efficiency of the sensor. Sensors are very different in access slots and chemical reactivity depending how they are mounted. If you happen to get a Ford sensor that fits all the design criteria and works efficiently more power to ya, we have used universal sensors for unmonitored systems for years. Those with "check engine lights" beware, just working is not enough.

Just a FYI. The 1990 Ford Mustang O2 sensor is a three wire Bosch unit. It is the same as the three wire Bosch O2 sensor used on W124's and W201's, the exact same sensor! Cut the plug off your old sensor and splice it on the new one. The OE Mercedes sensor is around $175 and the Mustang O2 sensor is around $36.
I had no problems passing emissions once my O2 sensor was replaced. |
