86 190e hydraulic lifters

I am trying to set base for hydraulic lifters on my 86 190e 2.3
Have a problem with removing the retaining ring which holds
the top shim in place. Do I need a special tools? What is the
correct disassembly procedure? Thank you in advance for your
help.

The upper shim comes out AFTER tapping DOWN on the shim & LIFTER. The snap ring stays in place.
