Squeeky Suspention HELP

So my right front end is making some noise, not always, just when i drive for awhile and turn at slow speeds also when i im on more bumpy roads. It used to do it a lot until i noticed a sway bar bushing was slipping, so i replaced that. It got rid of the noise for about 2weeks, then it came back more harsh sounding. My mechanic said it probably was a ball joint and said that would cost about 320. Well i don't have that kind of money right now. Are there anyother possibities. Could the whole control arm be messed up, because it does it more when im driving on more uneven surfaces. I know that more expensive, but im sure i could do both these jobs myself, with the correct tools that is. I just need to further diagnose it.
Any help would be great, thanks

I Would Enlist the help of a Friend to Bounce the car and You Inspect for the Squeak!
Inspect the Front Sway bar Bushings and The Lower Control arm Bushings for a start...Good Luck !

Thanks Mark,
Iv been doing some reading at school today and what i found out is that when a ball joint dosn't have enough grease then it will start to squeek when moving up and down and right to left. Well thats exactly what it does, the funny thing is that it dosn't do it all the time, 10/31 was the last day it really did it badly. But i have noticed the steering has been getting a bit worse.

I have the CD's for my car, but it dosn't tell you how to replace the Joint, if someone with the paper manual could do me a huge favor by scanning and sending me that info, i would be very appretiative. (Chris13H@aol.com)
Thanks everyone

Smells like a lower ball joint, If your mechanic is charging you 320$ for the repair get a new one (mechanic that is). You will need a ball joint press to install a new one..good luck

Thanks drbrandini,

When i replaced my sway bar bushing, i marked the sway bar to make sure it wouldn't slip, now i find out that it have moved away about 1cm. Would this be a problem? Should i try replacing the braket as well?
Thanks Everyone

Chris,

The sway bar is going to move just a little by design. I am not sure exactly what your asking....The brackets are probably ok

Chris17H 11-06-2002 12:24 PM

Well when i replaced the "slipping" bushing the noise stopped. So i was wondering if replaceing the bracket would help. but from what you said, it seems like it wouldn't.

OHHH, one last quesiton.
Would I have to compress the coil springs to replace the Ball Joint??

Yes

Hi Chris, I had the same thing happening. I recently bought a 1984 500 SEL and it had a squeeky front end when driving slowly and over speed-bumps etc. The front end was a bit bouncy so I did change to new Monroe progressive shocks and voila the squeeky noise is gone and the front end is much better.

Good luck,

Mikael
