What is the benefit of Lambda control? Can I add it?
 

I have a fuel distributor for my 77 450SL lying around(see attached pic) that has been removed and the correct fuel distributor(non-lambda)reinstalled. The distributor is in excellent working condition and I was wondering is it possible to convert my standard CIS system to lambda and if so, what are the benefits and or negatives. I notice there is an extra port that I did have blocked off(#1) and cap screw on top(#2) what are they for? I have read from my CD ther is a lambda valve and electronic controller that works with a Oxygen sensor. Are ther other things I would have to modify?

Forget it.

It would be a bunch of work and gobs of money for parts and then it wouldn't work. Your engine just won't run good that lean.

The 1980 450 had lambda control so all the pieces are available, but the car never idled good untill the idle air manifolding and swirl chambers were added.

The only advantage would be fuel mileage. They never run better.

Does anyone need the fuel distributor in this picture. I'll sell it cheap. It has good flow to all cylinders. If so contact me.

On my '79 450SL, how often do you see the orignal 'black' cast-iron fuel distributors go out and replaced with the updated alloy ones? Does it appear to be mileage related OR time related?

The original cast iron distributors haven't been available as spares for a long time. This makes all of the ones in service very old.

Among of the deficiencies the iron units corroded the plates between upper and lower chambers. The part is really a very durable component that loves constant use. I would say that sitting would be the greatest source of damage. In continuous use it can last forever.

I don't think they ever wear out. They corrode or get restricted with trash.
