280 SL Auto Trans Question
Hi,
I am very new to Mercedes Benz but not to the mechanical arts(I am currently a Saab tech) I purchased a 1970 280 SL last week that had been sitting for 21 years in a heated garage. I had it towed about 20 miles to my shop and discovered that the towing company towed it with the rear wheels on the ground which was bad enough. Then I discovered that the trans cooling lines were off and the trans was pretty dry. Since then I have pulled the entire driveline from fan to fuel tank and since the trans is on the floor should I just go ahead and rebuild it? Are the kits expensive? Are there manuals available?and finally what would I expect to pay for a good used transmission? |

I don't know what they are charging now, but ten years ago Bud's Benz was charging just $1300 for a remanufactured tranny with exchange: http://www.budsbenz.com/content/contentCT.asp?P=15

I'd get suspicious as to why the cooler lines were disconnected
It could be that there was just a radiator problem, but maybe it's a sign that the trans was due for a little work anyway.
I'd better get home and get back to reassembling the B-W 37 of my middle daughter's '90 900S. |

It was at a shop to see why the engine didn't turn over and they pulled the lines to acess the oil pan so it could be pulled. Not many people I know will take on a BW 37 you must be good at auto trans work. I always convert the 900's to 5 speed instead.

This was just a simple standard SAAB problem
Of torque convertor to oil pump drive prongs sheared off -- the rest of the box is in good shape, other than that it's taken me months to get it spotless clean inside. Daughter and I would have both prefered to go the 5 speed conversion route, but she didn't have the funds right now -- spent too much on her racing bicycle, I guess.
