How involved is replacing the timing chain/tensioner/etc. on a '81 300SD ?
I am comfortable with most light engine work.

Is there a standard parts list ?
Does it require proprietory MB tools ?
I have no way of telling if this was ever done on the car, which has 190,000 miles on the clock. I do not see a sticker indicating date/mileage of replacement.

Also, should I look into replacing the waterpump during this operation ?

The engine runs and great in all regards and gets 27+ on the highway.

If it isn't broken don't fix it. If you want to check its worthyness, just take off the valve cover and turn the engine by hand until the mark on the camshaft thrust washer lines up perfectly with the line on the cam stand. Take a flashlight and look at the degree marks on the crank balancer on the front and read the mark. If it is equal to ar less than 5 degrees you are OK. If not then think about replacement.

Just one more question....

How do you turn the engine by hand ?
I guess something connected to the crankshaft ?
Please excuse my ignorance.

The bolt on the crankshaft is a 27mm or you could use a 1 1/16". I personally would consider having the chain changed at that mileage as a preventative repair. Also replace the tensioner assembly. I would not consider a chain replacement "light engine work", so you might let a qualified tech do this repair.

Besides the tensioner assembly and the chain, are there any other parts need to be replaced or inspected for wear and tear inside the timing chain housing?

If the t-chain has wear the cam gear usually has the same.
