I'm familiar with testing electronics components and skilled at soldering, etc.

Should I attempt to open up the cruise control amp and study the innards ?
What is it they do when they're rebuilt ?

If this a trade secret, I understand.
Not trying to save a buck but just wanting to tinker with it first.
I would not do anything to ruin the core value of the amp if it does need to be turned in.

I am an electronics engineer, and took the same attitude toward my failed unit. In my case it was the LM2901 quad comparator - a 35 cent fix. However, if one of the timing caps fails or is leaky, you could really find yourself chasing your tail. Especially without a schematic. I got lucky. Rebuilt exchanges are pretty reasonable - might save you some Advil.

What have you got to lose.
I've fixed mine (same skill set) buy finding a broken trace. Patched and am now SET as they say in Cruise Control venacular.

Good Luck.
