Hi,
Where is the thermostat located in a 1987 300SDL MB?

Thermostat is locate right side of coolant pump.
pay a attention to installation position the recess on the thermostat must be aligned with rib in the thermostat cover.

Is a coolant pump the same as a water pump?

I just do not know.
