W124 Wiper mechanism (again)
 

Having read all the posts regarding the above, there seems to be two versions of the large cover that actually hides the actuating mechaism. On my '88 300E (UK model) it looks as though its made of metal and from underneath, using a small inspection mirror, I can see at least 4 hex screws that I guess hold it in place. From the existing posts, the only way to get this apart seems to be to remove the whole actuating arm assembly and that is quite job, when all I want to do is to quiten the Click/Click from the motion. My question is, do all the underside screws have to be removed to get the cover off? Two of the screws seem larger than the others, and it looks possible to release these using a right angled driver. Another "lazy" option I was considering was to drill a small hole in the top cover, inject as much grease as possible and seal the hole. That's sure to make all the real engineers squirm, but I bet its been done before!

I had my wiper mechanism removed out of my w201. i know the w124 uses the same viper mechanism but I'm not sure if the procedure to remove it is the same...

To the point...it's really an easy job removing this out of the w201. So if the w124 is similar...take it apart. It shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes to remove the whole assembly.

It depends on where the noise is coming from, the motor actually sits behind the front firewall, and uses a linkage to rotate the wiper hub (which itself is responsible for the up/down motion of the blade). In the end, it may simply be more effective to take the whole assembly out, and access it off the car. It's not too hard - I just went through this a little while ago to reach my blower motor - but it may take awhile to figure out how to remove the assembly the first time. The second time goes a lot faster.

p.s. if you disassemble the wiper linkages, etc., make sure you have a copy of the shop manual - it contains instructions for making sure everything is properly aligned. If you don't take the linkage apart, then don't have to worry.

Yes, all the screws need to come off to get the cover off.

I posted a very detail description of removing the blower motor, including a step-by-step instruction for removing the wiper arm assembly. I did it once, and detailed every step as I was doing it.

I had a click click in the blower motor, and thought the motor was going out, but in my case, it was debris that got in there and was rubbing against the blower fan blades.
