Angry Smashed Euro Lights!

Last night someone put their fist into my Euro lights, smashing the lenses in a fist shaped pattern (complete with 4 circular knuckle marks at the edge of the fist sized cracks!). They were Original Equipment Euro lights from a German MB 124, marked with both Hella and MB part numbers on the back of the lights and the mb logo as well. I have a call in to Fastlane to see if they can get Hella lenses. Is there a difference between Hella aftermarket lenses and the ones supplied at the MB dealerships in Europe? Would there be any advantage in trying to get lenses from MB in Europe as opposed to Hella replacements over here.

Also, it looks like rain got through one of the lenses and onto the reflectors. I assume these are 'silvered' units and difficult to clean. Any tips on cleaning would also be appreciated.

Thanks for any help!

www.puma-access.com hella euro lenses

they are all the same for early w124's.

which one do you need?

i have an extra pair of bosch [regular/fog beam] euro lenses, brand new available.

when you clean the reflectors use only microfiber cloth it will not produce swirls on the chrome reflectors(inside Lens)

Peter:

I hope they broke their hand! I have been calling around, Puma is closed for Veterans day today. The lights are Hella with MB symbols/numbers on the back, so I think the Bosch lenses may not fit. Or am I wrong?

Performance Products quoted $99/lens, and one month before they get here. Since the lights are 15 years old and plastic is aging, I am toying with the idea of new Euros instead of pumping $200 into the old ones. It will depend on what I find on the reflectors when I get in there.

If I do go with new lights, do you miss the fogs - how often do you get to use the driving lights? Are the driving lights and chrome surround worth the cost of 500E lights as opposed to 300E euros?

Ronald-m

Thanks for the tip! I will try cleaning them with a microfiber and distilled water. When I worked with lenses in college the silvering was very easily damaged, and I am a bit cautious of trying to clean the headlamp reflectors for fear of messing up the light output. The Hella site in Germany shows parts numbers for replacement reflectors, but I can't imagine what the cost would be even if a US shop could order them.

So, what will the shape of the dent in their face be when you find them?

I have zero tolerance for this sort of thing. I really hope I never catch anyone doing something like this because I have a fear that I will be the one going to jail, not them.

Best of luck with it,

the bosch lenses would fit.

i do miss the fog lights! i could use them a lot more.

i live in a somewhat rural area and can use the driving lights a fair amount.

the 500e euros are nicely chromed [on inside], headlight and driving light.

if you buy new ones, let me know.

thanks

i found some YELLOW h3 bulbs, the only drawback is they are 85 watt made by narva.

If you want to go with new ones, I might be interested in buying your old ones, as long as they do not get too wet inside.

Well, I pulled one of the lenses today - still about 1/4" of rain water sloshing around behind the lens on the drivers side, so that is the one I tackled. (note the knuckle shaped damage around the main ring, which was depressed in about the thickness of the glass!)

It IS possible to remove the lens without pulling the light, with patience and care. Of course, using good lighting and being forewarned of the possible problems helps. So I set up the shop light, and using caution reached for the spring loaded 'ears' on the turn indicator. As soon as I touched it, one ear fell off! This is going to be an expensive project. Got the lens off with not much problem, and found speckles of glass, dirt, and water all over the main and fog reflectors, and onto the bulbs. Thought a while about cleaning it, then decided that while the lights probably only lose about 5% with the light scratches, I would know it was there, and it would bug hell out of me. So figuring about $150-$200 for new headlamp lenses and $100 for reflectors, I am getting up towards the cost of new Euros with good reflectors.

Rats.

Now the question becomes Hella/Bosch vs. Depos, and late model clear/orange turn indicators vs. early model orange. Any thoughts?

JCE -

That really sucks. Idiots like that should be...well never mind what I think, this forum does not need that kind of language. Sorry to hear about it. If they used their fist to break it, I'd hate to see what their fist looks like. That glass is strong!

I bought Bosch euros and they look/operate fantastically. Although I have the newer style semi-clear corner lights, I prefer the look of the euro orange corners over the more yellow US versions. My Bosch euros came with the matching orange euro corners as well. I recently sold them on Ebay.

If you have the money, I'd say purchase the Bosch/Hellas over the Depo. Just my $0.02.
