Where is this filter located exactly? and How often should it be changed.

It is on the right side (as if you are sitting in car) under the wind screen under the hood. There is a big black over with large #3 phillps screws...Take out the screws and the filter is under it.

there are three filters in the s-class.which one?

I was not aware there were three.
So I would like to know where each one is and how to change it.
Also how often should they be changed.

The charcoal filter was an option. On a 94, i believe if you have it, the hood itself has the lateral slotted louvers toward the rear of the hood. If you have a flat hood, no louvers, you don't have charcoal system. you can also tell by the charcoal switch on the dash to activate the system. IF you have charcoal system, the charcoal filter is replaced only every 75,000 miles, but it costs in the neighborhood of $400 to $500:eek: and about 2 to 3 hours to replace :eek: :eek: ! The wiper assembly has to be removed to access it.
Then there is the filter Benzmac mentions, this is called either the "dust filter" (if the car has NO charcoal system) or the charcoal pre-filter (if it has charcoal system). If it is a no-charcoal system car, the "dust filter" is pretty cheap and is replace every 15,000 miles. If on the other hand it IS a charcoal system car, the charcoal pre-filter is a little pricey ($100-$200?) and is done every 45,000 miles.
The third filter is the recirc (recirculation) filter. This is the same on both versions, it's just a sheet of a white fiber mat material, very cheap. It's the only one located inside the cabin, under the dash in the passengers side footwell area. it's done every 15,000 on both versions.

PS later on in production of the 140, ALL had the slotted hood, in that case the only easy way to tell if it was a charcoal system car was by the switch for the charcoal system.
Also to clarify, ONLY the charcoal system cars have 3 filters:charcoal pre-filter, charcoal filter and recirc filter.
NON-charcoal cars have only 2:the dust filter and recirc filter.

Does 95 E320 have a filter
 

Does the 95 E320 have any filter elements? I've been told no. However there are part nos listed for the vehicle. The repair CD is unclear.

Any help is appreciated.

The 124 filter can be very confusing. I believe by 1995 they all had them. I went to the Bosch site, waited quite awhile, and it seemed like it was going to give me a pdf file for instructions, but the instructions never appeared.
You can identify if your 124 has a cabin dust filter by looking at the trim underneath the wiper arm. If there is a hard plastic U shaped ("smile" shaped) piece of trim, with about 5 small phillips head screws holding it down, you do NOT have the dust filter. If this area on the otherhand is a solid piece of rubber, which will pull up out of a channel, it has the dust filter. You can also try looking for the filter through the air intake screen for the climate control, but checking which style molding is under the wiper arm is even easier.
The installation I would say is easy to moderate in difficulty, an experienced tech should be able to do the job in 15 to 30 minutes if nothing goes wrong. The filter is accessed from the underhood area on a 124 chassis, NOT behind the glovebox like on a 210 chassis.

The '95 E320 (mine anyway) does have a dust filter. In fact it has two. They are about 12" long and 2.5-3 inches wide and their plastic housings are molded so that, when installed, they fit together (sort of like a tongue and groove). And they are located in the center of the car under the windshield wiper mechanism.

I may be the least experienced DIY'er on this list and I managed, with some anguish and unnecessary $'s to change mine last week.

Stu Ritters book has a pretty good "step by step" which was a big help (Ventilation, Dust Filter Replacing).

I looked on the web site and it does not show one for the sl500, is there one on the 129? Thanks Dairel

There is one (a dust filter only) on all 129's. It's the easiest one to replace. There is a black cover on the cowl that has 2 phillps screws holding it down, the filter is under that cover.
