Air flow sensor plate height questions.
Is it permissable to deviate from the factory recommended zero/resting height setting?
The car in question, a 87 16v, was starting great when cold, not so well when hot and stalling when braking after warming up. This was with the zero height set below the factory recommended setting. The hot start problem I attributed to a lack of the recommended 1-2mm clearnance on the control plunger. If I reset the meter to the factory setting, the car does not want to start. Thoughts. The setting could be taken down to .5mm of free play with fuel pressure running. This is how I do it. Do not prelaod it though as you may have. This will have too much fuel at idle and could allow for fuel to bleed in when sitting. You will have to take apart the housing to get it set back.
WARNING, NEVER take apart the fuel distributor. It will NEVER reseal.

I already took it apart and set it back to where I thought it belongs, based on the slight wear marks in the air flow funnel. There is now clearance before resistance is felt when deflecting the plate. This may seem like a silly question, but where is the specified 1 -2 mm movement before resistance measured from? It must be from the sensor plate, and I would assume the outer portion of the plate farthest from the fuel distributor??? I believe mine is close to 1mm at this point. So you set yours by jumping the pumps at the relay and tapping down the stop pin. Boy that must take a delicate touch to not punch it beyond the .5mm and have to take it apart!!! And the mixture will need to be rest to reflect the change. Tinker P.S. Donnie how about posting some pictures of that 400 hp turbo monster. |
