California Emission Control Equipment

I own a 98 E320. The original owner of the car is from Cailfornia. Upon obtaining the orginial invoice from MB there is an accessory code #494 which has a description "Calif Emisson Control Equip".

I was under the impression that the engines on this car (V-6 with dual spark plugs/cylinder) meet the California emissions from the factory. Does anyone know if additional emission control equipment was added?

California has the strictest emission controls in the country. Car makers must certify that their vehicles meet CA standards and many makers have to add to or adjust the systems on cars shipping to CA dealers. So you car has whatever CA requires if it was originally licensed in the Golden State.
