This may be the end of my 300e
 

I was told by a local tech this afternoon that (on top of my mystery shortage in the CISE, my newly remanufactured transmission only has third and fourth), my excessive fuel consumption was being caused by a leaking fuel distributor. Fuel running down the rubber connector between the fuel distributor and the intake. Nearly $1000 for the part. This is a sad day.:(

Cap'n - which "local" tech in Eastman are you using? How bout the wagon Allen is parting out in Macon? Is it the same part? You should be able to find one used that still works.

Richard at European Auto in Macon. Allen's car is still there. As a matter of fact, that was why I went by there, to check on it. I'm just sick of this thing. I've poured good money after bad into it. As soon as I have time I'll take some pictures and post them for the parting out.

What a drag! Your E is beginning to sound like my former TE. Sometimes the problems are relentless and endless. I suggest that you take a hard look at the car and see what it would take to get it in good shape. Assess the cost for this and see where the pile of cash can lead you. Fixing might be least expensive way to end up with a good E class, but so might selling and finding another. While I really enjoy the ride of a 124, there are better things to do than endlessly fix cars. With that in mind, I begun my hunt for a good 400E. It took a couple of months but a year into ownership, I have to say it was worth it...

I am looking at the financial aspects of getting the car running and then selling it. I really don't want to have to watch it disintegrate in my backyard while it parts out. It's a money pit and I should have bailed a long time ago. As soon as possible I hope to be posting in the SL forum.:)

Is that seal replaceable or was my tech just trying to scare me when he said remans don't work?

I've stuck several used ones on that did fine. Only had one bad reman from python. As far as doing the seal? Dunno, I think its just a fuel proof o-ring.

I've seen the seal, it's a little O ring. My book does have a procedure for replacing, in addition to replacing the entire unit. Either way you will need to adjust the Lambda. My '86 300E was diaged with the very same problem by a the dealer in Seattle. I bought the parts and ended up returning them.

Rough Idle and hesitation, as well as hot start long cranking. My E was not running $1k bad, so I declined the repair and kept driving it. When it finally started raining two weeks ago, the car began running and idling fine and I mean running very nicely! Perplexing. Did the dealer do a false diag? Do I have a vacuum system issue temporarily solved by moisture? Do I have some other seal somewhere temporarily sealed by moisture? We'll see what happens when the weather dries out again. (Hot start is still there, so I now think that is the fuel pump check valve and/or accumulator.)

what parts did you buy?

Dealer rebuilt (bosch rebuilt) Fuel Distributor and a little O ring they threw in -- some techs came in to the parts counter while I was there to consult and made the parts lady give me that. I also bought a Lambda Tower, in case mine was sealed with the 'BB, but it wasn't. Anyway, I returned it all.

Interesting, veeery interesting. I think I'll try it. What do I have to lose? I might as well become educated on fuel distributors while I'm here. Spin the old W124 repair CD and see what happens!

Also, I recently saw Bosch Reman Fuel Distributors from www.adsitco.com for $699

I haven't had the time to mess with it. I took it off the car but but getting to the o ring involved more than I suspected. I'll get back to it later. Leaning toward buying a used one and taking my chances.
