2.3-16V valvecovers & such

Does anyone have the part number for the 2.3-16V valve cover?

I have inspected the 2.5-16V cover and it's different from the 2.3-16V's by that I mean the labels and logos are cast into the cover in the 2.5 while on the earlier 2.3's it was more like stick on's.

Are the 2.3 and 2.5 valve covers interchangable?

Btw, I've found a used 2.5-16V complete cylinder head for sale.
My car is a 2.3-16V. Are there any difference in the cams, springs etc. between the 2? I only know the timing chains are double on the 2.5's. Any benefits of installing a top half of 2.5 on a 2.3 lower? Exhaust cam ends near the timing chain side appears different, mine have extensions to run the hydralic pump for SLS while the 2.5head I found the cam ends are different ( non attached to pump drive?).

whats the engine no. code for 2.5-16V. I believe the 2.3's were 102.983.

any info on the technical difference between the 2 would be helpful.I would swap in a 2.5-16V if it's a possible drop in conversion.

thanks

alex

Hi alex!

If you do know a little bit german you can always do a search on www.mbatc.de . This is MBs own recycling center and you can find alot of stuff at this page. The catch with it is that you'll have to know the german word for the part you're searching for...

Greetinz,

I believe the 2.5 16 valve engine number is m102.991 with date code of 3/89-8/93. The EVOI engine number is m102.940 with date code 9/88-8/93

The engine type for the 2.5 16V is 102.990
The biggest difference(other than 2.5 liter) is that engine had a DOUBLE row timing chain.
Valve cover & head will interchange. The EURO 2.5 motors had different cams from the USA cars. about 9 deg more duration.
The cam gears are different!

The EVO motor is a 102.991 engine. NO parts from this engine will interchange with the USA engines

Good info. How about converting a regular 2.3-16 to double row timing chain like 380SL owners do? Is it possible? Also, if you do put a 2.5 16v head on a 2.3 16v, which timing chain can you use? Thanks.

Actually the m102.990 is listed as the EVOI at 204 hp (made a mistake and posted m102.940) and the M102.991 is listed as just a 2.5 16 valve at 194 hp and the EVOII is listed at m102.992.

The m102.990 motor is not the regular 2.5 16 valve motor, as hp is rated at 204.

Is the Euro 2.3-16V having the same cams as the 2.5-16's.

from what i see the improvement that was done on the 16'v developemnt from 2.3l to 2.5l was mercedes improving the vavle train system for higher PRM limits. Minimize valve float, incresing valve spring rates, lighten valves (not sure) etc. As the engine breathes easier on the rpm's more power can be produced. Check the racing versions 10,000+ rpm.

When I was younger (10 years ago) I've seen evo's racing with e30 m3's in the south east asian supercar racing. wasn't really into cars then, but i still remember the black 190 evo's (ex-dtm works machines) from thailand almost always kicking m3's butt.

I do think the evo's are higher cost to maintain in race form further more the volume of cars produced were low. There are still a few e-30 M3's running in the supercar category in my region.
